I swear, if I see one more gift guide for Father’s Day full of BBQ equipment and whisky glasses… *yawn*. But seriously, why are gift guides so generic? It’s because they’re trying to appeal to as MANY people as possible all at once… But you’re not buying a gift for every possible dad on the planet. You’re buying for YOUR loved one. So, this year I’ve got a different approach to share with you that could result in an incredible Father’s Day.
Let’s give the gift of the pure happiness and nostalgia of a positive childhood memory!
The Power of Nostalgia

We all have those core memories that bring a feeling of pure happiness when we think back on them. These are moments from a time when life was carefree, with no burdens or responsibilities. For dads, who face their own set of societal pressures, a day that makes them feel like a kid again can be an amazing gift.
How to Find This Memory
- Have a chat about their favourite activities growing up. Listen for stories that light up their face!
- Talk to other family members who might know more about their childhood interests and hobbies.
Recreating the Activity
Use what you’ve learned to recreate this memory as close as possible! Maybe it’s an entire day’s adventure, or maybe it’s one specific thing like a certain movie or meal. Although some childhood memories and activities are easier to recreate than others, it’s possible to infuse some elements of these memories into Father’s Day this year. Here are some ideas to get you started:
- Activities with their Dad: Was there a special event they waited all year to go to?
- Special Events: Is there a certain event or festival they LOVED attending?
- Favourite Restaurant: Is there a certain restaurant that was a highlight of their childhood?
- Family Traditions: Maybe there’s an old family tradition they used to do as a kid that has fallen by the wayside…
Enhancing the Experience
- Inviting Influential Figures: If possible, invite individuals who were part of these childhood memories, like old friends, siblings, or even their father if that’s possible.
- Documenting the Experience: Take photos or videos to capture the moment, creating new memories that will be cherished in the future.
- Adding Personal Touches: Include elements that make the activity special, such as their favourite snacks or maybe certain music from their childhood.
Make It a Tradition!
Consider making this recreated activity a new annual tradition, creating a new family ritual that honours the past, strengthening family bonds and keeping memories alive!
Why I love this idea

It’s about the furthest thing from a generic gift you can get! Recreating a favourite childhood activity for your loved one is entirely unique to them and guaranteed to evoke some sentimental feelings (checking the box for multiple pillars of gifting) but it is also a very sustainable gift as experience gifts on average generate less waste than physical ones. Besides, sometimes the best gift is spending quality time together and creating lasting memories.
So, this year, instead of a cookie-cutter Father’s Day gift, give your loved one the gift of a day without burdens or responsibilities, a day that makes them feel like a kid again.
Bring on the nostalgia!
